The Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program was founded in July 2001 as a program within the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic. The Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program was specifically created to help address the ever increasing patient interest in wellness-promoting activities that have not typically been part of conventional medical care.
The vision of the program is to:
• Continually identify and rigorously examine the expanding realm of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, using a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative approach.
• Present, publish and disseminate reliable information regarding Complementary and Integrative Medicine using public and professional outlets.
• Ensure that Mayo Clinic continues to meet the comprehensive needs of our patients with respect to the body, mind, and spirit.
Thanks to increased research during the past two decades, doctors are now better able to understand the role these 'alternative' therapies can play in helping treat and prevent disease. Many of these therapies-such as massage therapy, herbal supplements and meditation have gained recognition that these practices may hold value in meeting our health needs. The blending of the best of both worlds — conventional medicine and alternative medicine — is known as integrative medicine.
