Stanford Center for Integrative Medicine

Comprehensive Evaluation and Integrative Medicine Counseling We provide an hour-long evaluation and counseling program to help patients match integrative medicine offerings with individual needs. This involves assessing medical problems, coping resources, family and social support, and evaluating patient goals, abilities, and opportunities. We help patients evaluate available non-traditional treatment options. We help patients to combine "alternative" techniques, including acupuncture, hypnosis, mindfulness, therapeutic massage, and information regarding dietary supplements, with traditional medical care. Our evaluation and counseling staff includes a physician-naturopath, an internal medicine/psychiatrist, and a psychiatrist. A reliable source of information about Integrative Medicine is the National Institute of Health's National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) website. Acupuncture A procedure that involves inserting needles in specific points on the body to manipulate and stimulate those areas. Therapeutic massage Provides help for people with a broad spectrum of health problems ranging from general stress to serious illnesses such as cancer to provide physical as well as emotional benefits. Medical hypnosis Enables patients to focus intently on a specific problem and its resolution while maintaining a comfortable state of physical relaxation. Individual psychotherapy Enables patients to cope with current stresses that cause anxiety, chronic pain, fatigue, depression and uncomfortable physical symptoms. Can be combined with other techniques such as hypnosis or guided imagery, as well as medication.
